It’s called the Superman building because it looks like the Daily Planet in the Superman comic book and on the 1950’s TV series. Another interesting fact the top of the Superman building has a mooring mast that was meant to dock airships and Zeppelins —then thought to be the vehicle of the future. From 1928 until 2013, a bank had always been the major tenant in the building. Since 2013, when the last bank tenant moved out, the icon has remained vacant. In 2019 it was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. For many years the superman building stood as a silent, sleeping giant in downtown Providence.
