Description: TITLE: Tales of the Dark Knight: Batman's First Fifty Years 1939-1989 ABOUT THIS PRODUCT: Although they won't gain a critical assessment of the superhero genre, Batman fans will enjoy this detailed chronicle of the classic comic book, one of the few published continuously since its launch in the "golden age of comics." Created by Bob Kane in 1939 to capitalize on the then-new superheroecho ok?/yes/pk craze, Batman and his sidekick, Robin the Boy Wonder, have undergone many concept changes and redesigns. The author details the Batman story lines from the strip's pulp fiction beginnings through its do-good "scoutmaster" period in the 1940s; its preoccupation with alien invaders and science fiction themes in the '50s; the campy, lighthearted approach of the '60s, influenced by the hit TV show; a modernization of Batman's crime-fighting equipment in the '70s; and in the '80s, Frank Miller's enormously successful Dark Knight reinterpretation, which essentially returned to the characters' pulp roots and transformed Batman into a brooding--and savage--urban vigilante. The text by copyediting: use of both names correct?pk/i'd say yes/lk Cotta Vaz, a martial arts instructor and freelance journalist, is accompanied by reproductions of the artwork by Bob Kane and later artists like Dick Sprang. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc. ****************************************************************************** Chapters include: Shadow Of The Batman, Dark Knights Of The Past, Monarch Of The Golden Age, The Comic Book Front, A Batman Christmas, Comic Crackdown, Robin The Boy Wonder, The Strange Lives Of Batman And Robin, Batman's Big City Beat, Around The World With Batman, Dark Knight In Time, Pop Goes The Batman, Descent Into The Bat Cave, Detective Science, Terrible Traps/ Fantastic Escapes, The Loves Of Batman, The Warrior Batman, Bat-Noir, Into The Underworld, Obsession, Dark Knight Of The Eighties, Gotham Gotterdammerung, The Death Of The Batman, Dream Of The Dark Knight. In addition to the chapters, there are a number of small Dossier sections that are excellent. One, "The Hall Of Trophies", even has a brief description of Alfred as The Eagle. Another great feature is the many full-color covers spanning the years 1939-1988. All are sharply reproduced with great colors and crisp lines. Also, all interior page reproductions are almost perfect; only some of the very old or greatly enlarged panels are a bit fuzzy or sludgy. This book is great since it doesn't require a large time investment to enjoy it UNLESS YOU WANT TO. I often open this book while having a small snack, and always enjoy the 2 to 15 minutes spent looking over the pages. It seems I always find something new. There's always a small quote or Dossier or piece of trivia that's worth reading. Same with the reproduced comic pages (usually ranging from a couple panels to 3 pages) which are only in B/W.....they are always rewarding and insightful, and mesh well with the text while also standing strong alone. A person could indeed read a few chapters in one sitting and not feel fatigued or overwhelmed.....the text is clear and not high-brow, but not fanboy-ish either. UNFORTUNATELY the publisher of this book did not bound the book very well. All the pages are counted for. Laying the book flat to read will stress the binding excessively, so each cover needs to be supported in a sort of a V formation. The color cover reproduction pages seem to be the least secure, and as a result of the weight the spine is no longer firmly bound Product Key Features Book Title Tales of the Dark Knight: Batman's First Fifty Years Author Mark Cotta Vaz Binding: Softcover/Trade Paperback Language English Dimensions: 11 x 1 x 8.5 inches Illustrations: 48 classic comic covers in full color Product Identifiers Publisher: Ballantine Books Publication date: 1989 ISBN 13: 9780345360137 ISBN 10: 0345360133 eBay Product ID (ePID) 1428014 Number of Pages 210 Topic Comics & Graphic Novels Genre Literary Criticism CONDITION: VERY GOOD+.
