Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Boris Alexandrovich Zelensky was born in Petrograd. He studied at the studios of S. M. Seidenberg in Leningrad (1925–1927) and K. F. Yuon in Moscow (1930–1932), at the Moscow Art School (MHU, 1932–1933) under S. I. Frolov and at the Moscow Art - industrial school named after M. I. Kalinin (MHPU, 1933–1939) under S. F. Nikolaev. The son of the artist Alexander Nikolayevich Zelensky, the founder of Soviet advertising, followed the example of his father, since 1931 he has been engaged in commercial advertising: he made advertising brochures for shops, posters for tobacco factories, confectioneries and wineries, most of which eventually became an integral part of the life of Muscovites. Although Boris Zelensky considered himself a poster artist, he also illustrated and designed books for Politizdat, Young Guard, drew for the magazines Krokodil, Ogonyok, Soviet Circus. By order of the state joint-stock company "Intourist" he performed advertising posters. Throughout his life, the artist worked a lot in industrial graphics: he developed labels, brand names, catalogs, and brochures. Boris Zelensky is the author of the design of famous Soviet brands and posters ("Smoke Aurora Cigarettes" 1950). The artist's works were exhibited at all-Union and foreign exhibitions (London, 1934; Vienna, 1948 and others). At the last, he became the main laureate - this event became a turning point in his creative career and finally persuaded him to work on posters for films. His pre-war works include posters for such comedies as "Volga, Volga", "Circus". It so happened that Boris Alexandrovich always created posters for the best Soviet films: "Brave People", "True Friends", "Jumper", "Communist", "The Fate of a Man", "Forty-First", "The Cranes Are Flying", "Othello" , "Optimistic tragedy", "Hamlet", "Wedding in Malinovka", "They fought for the Motherland" and many others. He also worked on foreign films that were shown in the Soviet film distribution. One of the artist's favorite posters is his poster for the English film Oliver Twist, where the author depicted his sympathy and affection for the main character. In the post-war years, Boris Zelensky drew for the magazines Krokodil, Ogonyok, and Soviet Circus. He worked on cartoons as an animator, illustrated and designed books for Politizdat, Young Guard. Created posters for films and political posters, advertising posters. In 1948 he received a diploma at the international poster exhibition in Vienna (for the film "Pirogov"); in 1957 - diploma of the All-Union exhibition of books, graphics and posters (film "Othello"). Made a number of posters dedicated to various mass and popular sports: "Join the ranks of DOSFLOTA!" (1948), "World Championship in Skating for Women" (1950), "The First World Championship in Volleyball for Women's Teams" (1952), "Join DOSAAF. Master maritime specialties "(1954)," Soviet youth, go in for boxing! (1955), "Competition for the world championship in speed skating for men" (1955). The author of political and social posters: "Greetings to the courageous and fearless fighters-border guards, vigilant sentries of the country of socialism!" (1939), "Long live the VKP(b) party of Lenin-Stalin, the inspirer and organizer of our victories!" (1947), "We Faithfully Serve the Motherland!" (1948), "Vote for the Candidates of the Bloc of Communists and Non-Party People" (1950), "All to the Elections!" (1950), "For Peace!" (1951), “Five-year plan overfulfilled! We will not remain in debt! (1956), "Fix the defect in time! Study and implement the experience of master Lidia Savelieva” (1957), “Study Marxism-Leninism and put it into practice!” (1957), "Long live the Soviet-Bulgarian friendship!" (1958), "Let's transport the cargoes of the seven-year plan ahead of schedule!" (1960), “May 1st. We will complete the seven-year plan ahead of schedule! (1961), "For the Victory of Communism!" (1962). Zelensky loved the film poster and invariably defended it as an important, independent form of fine art. In his opinion, poster art is worthy of the right to complete independence and freedom. “Without the ability for artistic composition, without a good drawing, the work of an artist is unthinkable,” these words of Zelensky reflect the artist’s personal experience and the development of his talent. Thanks to the excellent art school he went through, his abilities and constant self-improvement, the artist never encountered technical difficulties. In most of his works of the second half of the 1950s-1970s, Zelensky achieved a surprisingly accurate and subtle transfer of the main features of the film characters. In them, the sharp piercing of experiences is best achieved, their destinies are conveyed, as a rule, tragic ones. In the 1950s, B. A. Zelensky headed the poster section of the Moscow branch of the Union of Artists and became its chairman. An extraordinarily prolific artist, the author of more than 400 film posters, an artist who respected the traditions of poster art and at the same time modernized them, creating new artistic means of self-expression, Zelensky left a significant mark on the visual arts and a huge creative legacy to his followers. Posters of Boris Zelensky are represent in the Russian State Library (RSL), in the collection of funds of the V. I.
