Two-time Academy award winner Barbra Streisand plays Hillary Kramer, a successful fragrance entrepreneur whose business manager has just split with most of her assets. One he overlooked - or purposefully ignored - was the contract of handsome ex-fighter Eddie "Kid Natural" Scanlon (Ryan O'Neal), who has no intention of going back into the ring. But Hillary has no intention of starving, so the Kid puts on the gloves - and gets his brains knocked out. Streisand and O'Neal make a fine comedy team, as evidenced by their 1972 hit What's Up, Doc?, and they trade the verbal punches of the Gail Parent / Andrew Smith script with the energy and panache of the great '30s and '40s romantic comedy duos. But it's not boxing but the meeting of love and laughter that's the main event of The Main Event. And it's nice to feel the knockout punch of movie magic again.
