George Washington Bethune (1805-1862), b. in New York city to devout Christian parents. He graduated at Dickinson College in 1822 and subsequently studied theology at Princeton, being ordained in the Presbyterian church in 1825. He accepted an appointment as chaplain to seamen in the port of Savannah, but in 1826 returned to the north and transferred his ecclesiastical alliance to the Reformed Dutch church, accepting the pastoral calls of several churches in the Utica, NY area. - Appleton. He afterward was the pastor of Reformed Dutch churches in Philadelphia and Brooklyn. He was accomplished as both a theologian and a student of literature, published numerous works in both fields.
