(1817-1903) IN THE WOLVERHAMPTON ART GALLERY Although the painter of this picture lived to see something of the modern trend of English art, and even exhibited at the Academy up to within a few years of his death, his reputation as a painter belongs to what is known as the Early Victorian" period of art. Painters then took their work—so far as subject was concerned at least—very seriously indeed. They cultivated that "grand manner" in painting which led to the formation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and a closer association with nature and humanity. As the nephew of Sir Augustus Callcott—whose name he was given—it was almost inevitable that Horsley should have been trained to follow in his uncle's footsteps, and that in accordance with his predestined course of life that he should have been sent to the Royal Academy Schools to prepare himself for this end. While yet in his studentship he was represented for the first time at the Academy with" Rent Day at Haddon Hall in the Sixteenth Century," and in 1836, that is to say when he was nineteen years of age, was exhibited his "Pride of the Village "—the forerunners of a long series of domestic and romantic genre works. While still a young man he was appointed headmaster of the National School of Design at Somerset House, and in 1843 took part in the competition for the Westminster frescoes. His cartoon of "St. Augustine Preaching" was awarded a prize of 1200, and in the following year he was selected with five other artists to execute further frescoes for the Houses of Parliament, his "Spirit of Religion" being selected for the House of Lords. In 1 847 he was again successful in a similar competition, and painted two more of those frescoes, which are to-day but ghosts of the original works. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1855 and a full member in the following year. In 1882 he became Treasurer of the Academy, and from 1 870 until a few years before his death was responsible for the Old Masters Exhibition at Burlington House. Perhaps he is best remembered for his crusade against the exhibition, and even the study, of paintings and drawings of the nude female figure, which he instituted in the 'eighties, and which earned for him in Punch the sobriquet of J. C(lothes) Horsley."
