ABOUT PAUL THEVENAZ Paul Thevenaz, an art deco muralist and illustrator, was born at Geneva, Switzerland, on February 22, 1891. His childhood, spent in the clear heights of the Swiss mountains, his very soul was immersed in nature’s beauty. The crystal lakes of Switzerland, the flaming sunrise, behind glistening, towering peaks, white rushing torrents, emerald fields, carpets of vivid flowers—all of these indescribable influences were burning into his sensitive appreciation. He no doubt inherited diverse artistic tendencies. These he sought to gratify by travel and arduous work. First he traveled to Italy and then to Paris where he gained recognition as a portrait painter. His work was distinctive in two ways: first there was the elimination of the background, and second, he put more pure likeness into the portrait. During his six years in Paris, the pre-war cubistic movement claimed him and he became known as a Crystalist and a Prismatist. It was also during this time that Thevenaz came under the influence of Stravinsky and Cocteau, and his paintings and murals reflect this. The striking art deco plates and gay-themed male portraits are exquisite. Thevenaz died young in 1921. The prints in this series are from a rare compilation of his work (limited to 1000 copies) published with the encouragement of the poet Witter Bynner, Thevenaz’ companion.
