The fruit is typically pinkish-red beefsteak-shaped best known for its taste. This beefy tomatoes mature in approximately 75 to 90 days. The plant is indeterminate and can grow to an average height of 8 feet. The fruits are continuously produced throughout the growing season. This variety was developed in the 1930’s by a radiator mechanic working from his home-based repair shop in Logan, West Virginia. Like many depression era home owners, M.C. Byles (aka Radiator Charlie) was concerned about paying off his home loan. Mr. Byles developed his renowned tomato by crossbreeding four large-fruited varieties of tomatoes: German Johnson, Beefsteak, an Italian variety, and an English variety. Mr. Byles planted the latter three varieties in a circle around the German Johnson, which he hand-pollinated using a baby’s ear syringe. From the resulting tomatoes, he saved the seeds and for the next six years he continued the painstaking process of cross pollinating the best seedlings. In the 1940’s, Radiator Charlie sold his Mortgage Lifter tomato plants for $1 each. The variety gained in popularity and gardeners came from as far away as 200 miles to buy his seedlings. Charlie was able to pay off his $6,000 home loan in 6 years, hence the name Mortgage Lifter. Beefsteak tomatoes Beefsteak tomatoes, well known for large, thickly fleshed fruits, are one of the favorite tomato varieties for the home gardeners. These are open pollinated variety producing a huge fruit size of average 2 lb (BIG!). This beefy tomatoes mature in approximately 75 to 90 days. The plant is indeterminate and can grow to an average height of 8 feet. The fruits are continuously produced throughout the growing season. Growing beefsteak tomatoes requires a heavy cage or stakes to support the heavy fruits. Beefsteaks are always grown for their flavor and size for slicing and summer sandwiches. This variety produces large, meaty red fruit over a long season on indeterminate plants. Because it matures late compared to many other tomatoes, it will provide a fresh harvest in the latter part of the season. This is an old favorite beloved by gardeners in the Northeast and grown throughout the country. Vigorous vines grow best in tall cages. Resistant to fusarium wilt (F) and nematodes (N). The yellow pear tomato The yellow pear tomato is an heirloom tomato, a bite size, old-time favorite. This historic mini-tomato can trace its lineage back to the 1700s in Europe. During the 1800s, this sweet, small, pear-shaped tomato came to both England and the United States. It traveled west with the pioneers and north with the fur trade. This gardener’s favorite will present you with the first clusters of pleasant, mild-flavored, 2 to 3 inch charming sunny yellow mini pear-shaped fruits in about 73 to 80 days and then will continue with more throughout the season. Like other yellow tomatoes, the yellow pear tomato has beta-carotene that can help neutralize free radicals that may damage people’s cells. In addition, yellow pear tomatoes have vitamin C, niacin, folate and potassium to help regulate blood pressure, nerve function and muscle control. All tomatoes need sun and well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Amend soil with compost or other organic matter before planting tomatoes. Plant deeply, burying two-thirds of the stem, about 36 inches apart. Pinch off lower leaves and set the plant in the ground at an angle so that the stem is horizontal underground but upright the above ground. The yellow pear is an indeterminate type tomato. Although its fruit is small, its vines are large and hardy. They will grow vigorously to about 10 to 12 feet tall. Consider using tall sturdy cages or some form of support.
