Description: Topper Toys Johnny Seven - Speed Set - Electric Sports Car & Speedboat & Trailer Very rare Vintage 1960s super-size Speed Set from Topper Toys of Hayes, Middlesex. Great attention to detail all through this set and you can imagine someone’s little eyes popping when this was unwrapped as the car is 38x15x12cm and the boat and trailer are 35x15x10cm. Plastic construction with a battery-powered motor for the car and an elastic band powered propeller for the speedboat. Topper were part of US Deluxe Reading Toy Co Ltd and perhaps best known for their Johnny Seven OMA (One Man Army) gun. The first picture shows the sports car, trailer, speedboat, sales leaflet and remnant of the original box. There is also a set of instructions shown in one of the later photos. The sports car doesn’t appear to be a specific make or model. The red plastic body is in the style of a front-engined, 2-door, sports convertible. The plastic is shiny, unfaded and generally intact, although there are two cracks on the rear deck by the luggage rack. There are two gold stripes running the length of the bonnet between some bonnet vents. There is also a stylised ‘7’ logo in black on the passenger door. The blue-tinted windscreen is intact with all 4 of its locator tabs although is slightly warped. The windscreen will be removed for transit. There is a chrome plated plastic luggage rack which is intact with some plating loss to the the middle bars. There should be a white plastic aerial on the rear wing which is missing. The interior is black with white grooved seats, a white 3-spoke steering wheel and a ribbed chrome plated dashboard with white on black dial detailing. The white lever between the seats is the on/off lever for the electric motor. The motor runs off 2x 1.5v D/LR20/AM1 cells in a compartment underneath. The motor has been tested and is working as it should. The contacts have been cleaned up and metal/elevctrical parts lubricated with WD40 and plastic parts with silicone lubricant. It’s powerful enough to spin the rear plastic wheels on a polished hard floor. Front and rear bumpers also contain the grille/lights/licence plate/rear exhaust pipes/tow hook and are all intact, ding free, and still well coated with chrome plating. The side sills are also chrome plated items, along with the wheel covers, styled with 3-eared spinners. It rides on near mint black plastic “Topper Tires”. The chassis is black plastic and has a manual steerable front axle, clean battery compartment with its original sliding battery cover, and electric motor and gearing for the driven rear axle. The speedboat trailer is a simple plastic ladder construction with a metal axle, plastic tyres and detailed chrome wheel hubs. Its intact hook fits into the opening under the car’s bumper. The trailer also holds the metal winding key for the rubber band motor on the speedboat and is clipped in place at the front. I’m guessing the holes and pegs at the back of the trailer were for a securing strap when it was in the packaging. The speedboat is a period 1960s hydroplane. The hull is in two pieces - white on top, red underneath. The white upper half has a red stylised ‘7’ logo on one side and the same gold stripes. The cockpit has a moulded dials and a static chrome plated plastic steering wheel. There’s a chrome plated engine cover with 4 exhausts. The seat is part of the lower moulding. Both halves are intact and all the screws are there. The white is a little grubby in places although amazing condition for 60 years old. It’s designed to float and be used in rock pools or ponds. As you can see from the photo that shows it opened, the original floatation pieces are still intact - as are both halves of the hull. The white plastic 4-bladed propeller is powered by an elastic band that you wind up using the key on the trailer. I’ve put a postie’s band in there for now and it works just as it should. There’s a simple ratchet at the front to keep the band tensioned and the power of the band is transmitted to the propeller by a set of gears. There’s a white plastic stop/go lever on top of the chrome engine and a white plastic rudder underneath with notches in the hull to hold it in place in the desired direction. I’m guessing the holes in the front of the boat and the notch underneath the front of the trailer were for a securing strap when it was in the packaging. It comes with the original product catalogue which shows the OMA, this set and others - including the range of Penny Brite dolls. The card background in the first photo appears to be part of the original box - unfortunately the only piece I have. I couldn’t find a single example for sale or sold elsewhere - with no pictures anywhere online - other than from the catalogue. A rare find - particularly one so intact and functioning. 📦+📦+📦=🚛 Combined shipping is available for all items (even if you’re not in the UK).
