Description: After a bit more than 60 years of collecting it is time to move my collections along. Here is a bronze AE3 of Valens who ruled from 364-378 AD as Emperor of the eastern Roman Empire. This coin has a nice bronze patina on the obverse and on the reverse a neat greenish bronze patina. The coin is 17mm in diameter. On the obverse is a pearl diademed, cuirassed bust of Valens right with the legend DN VALENS PF AVG. On the reverse is a classic design of Victory advancing left holding a wreath and the legend in Latin is SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE. This coin is referenced as one of several varieties of this design in RIC IX. This coin has decent detail and will make an interesting and inexpensive addition to your collection. I have had several question as to which websites I use and recommend for research and while there are several good ones, I particularly like Wildwinds.com and numismatics.org and also forumancientcoins.com. I have been asked what could these type coins buy in Roman days? As inflation continued to increase during this time period, one of these was about equivalent in worth to about one US dollar and two of these would buy enough bread for one day for a family or one liter of common wine so these type coins were used frequently for daily needs. As everything needs to find a new home, a very good price and FREE SHIPPING to within the US.
