"Man wants but little here below," and provided the Bengali peasant has that little, in the shape of a few oxen, his small crop, and the rain upon which both depend, he is fairly contented. The climate makes the expenses of housing and clothing insignificant. And, provided that the thick thatch will keep out the torrential rains of the wet weather and the scorching summer sun, little is required to complete the simple structure in which the villager lives, surrounded, as we here see, by his small possessions.
