Description: After more than 60 years of collecting books, it is time to move my collections along to new homes. In 1982 I ran across a 17 volume deluxe edition set of Victor Drury’s 1885 epic work, “History of Rome and of the Roman People.” Drury (1811-1894) was a French scholar who wrote extensively on ancient Roman and Greek civilizations and his books were very detailed and extensively illustrated. This deluxe set was limited to 1000 copies, to subscribers only, and the set is hand printed number 294 of 1000. The book bindings while beautiful, were in poor condition and I planned to work with my older brother who does bookbinding and repair to restore the collection. Over the years, smaller book projects took priority and these sets have sat on one of my shelves, loved and cared for, but not ever restored. Now, my older brother is not able to do the work and it is time to move these items along. Some of the books have pages that are barely attached and I have decided to recover some of the maps, prints, plates, and prints as they are interesting, historical, and would look great framed. This large colorful lithographed map is from Volume IV of the set and shows Italy as it was known under Roman rule in the 1st century CE. The map, lithographed by W & AK Johnson, Edinburgh & London, is very detailed and shows aspects of Italy, Sardinia, and Silicy as they were then named. The map is the original (not a copy) from the book, is printed on linen vellum paper (medium heavy). This is a fold out map from Volume II and is printed on one continuous large sheet measuring 14 1/2” x 11 1/2” when unfolded, and 11 1/2” x 7 1/2” when folded. The back of the map is blank and has no printing. There is a small 8mm tear on mid-left center of the map that is shown in the pics however this would not show if framed as it is would be under any matting. The map comes with two additional pages of written material on the geography and population of Ancient Rome. This is a very clean historical map with great detail and would make for an interesting display. To ensure it arrives safely, it will ship folded and flat and will be enclosed in an archival sleeve suitable for long or short term storage. As everything needs to find a new home, I will provide FREE SHIPPING to within the US.
