It was founded in 1917 in Johannesburg, South Africa by German born Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, and is one of the largest mining companies in the world. In 1961, Anglo American gained controlling interest in the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company in Manitoba, Canada. Now called "Hudbay" as a division of Anglo American, they mine and process zinc, copper, nickel, gold and silver through nine mines and 4 mills in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The Anglo American / Hudbay mining operations go back for almost 100 years in Manitoba's Flin Flon, Snow Lake Greenstone Belt. Their Lalor mine in Snow Lake produces gold, zinc, copper and silver.The 1 oz. .999 Anglo American Metals silver bar offered here was likely produced around 1981 judging from the casting style of the bar. It is a wonderful example from this refiner, the pressed bars seem fairly uncommon compared to the big pours they put out in a variety of sizes. These bars are becoming more rare and hard to obtain.
