Vintage Raleigh Super Course 23 1/2" Frameset Reynolds 531 Frame & Fork, Extras

Description: Lightly used, but weathered, 1972 Raleigh Super Course frame, fork and extras. The frame has Reynolds 531 chrome manganese straight gauge tubing in the main triangle, and low carbon steel fork and rear stays, all joined in lovely, ornate, Nervex lugs. The front fork and rear stays are chromed. This is Raleigh’s 23-1/2" frame size. The seat tube measures 59cm from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube and the top tube measures 56cm from the center of the seat tube to the center of the head tube. I have owned 4 of these in my lifetime, and they were my most used bikes, because they were great for commuting, touring, and/or gravel biking. I built up this frame before confronting the reality of my new 2-bedroom apartment, which is demanding a folding bike. The bike has no dents or frame alignment issues: rides straight hands off. It was quite comfortable over a 50-mile test ride. Included in the auction is the original Raleigh headset, re-greased and adjusted so it spins very smoothly. The bearing surfaces showed no evidence of use whatsoever, not the slightest polishing of the races. The bottom bracket bearings were similar, indicating this bike was used little, if at all, since its production 52 years ago. Unlike later Super Courses, this one has the propietary Raleigh 26 TPI threading on the fork steerer and the bottom bracket. The original headset is included, and old Raleigh bottom brackets are easy to find. The bike originally had with 27" wheels, but will fit 700c wheels with the long reach BMX side pull brakes included with the auction. The original Weimann center pull brakes, were a bear to adjust to get mediocre braking performance; side pulls are easier to work with and work well. The front fork and rear stays can clear 700C X 35mm tires. This bike was left outside, seemingly with the left side facing the sun, so all the paint is faded, the left more than the right. The frame has minimal rust inside, and outside rust forms a patina - there is no deep rust/flaking. The appearance of universal light rust makes this, while not a show-off bike, certainly a theft-unlikely bike. Great fixed gear candidate. Not many scratches and scrapes actually, and, as shown in the last photo, the kickstand did not crush the chainstays.
