This Chinese Stubby Pear Shape Yixing Zisha 宜兴紫砂 purple clay Zini 紫泥 teapot has been adorned with the Dragon and the Phoenix which are the two of the most powerful symbols of success and prosperity in Chinese mythology. The Dragon and Phoenix are made of hand applied green Lüni 绿泥 tan clay, Hongni 红泥 red clay with black clay eyes. The applied clay has been carefully hand detailed with care. The artist's work on the feathers and scales attest to his skills. Tall 3 ¾ inches, wide 4 3/8 inches and from spout to handle 6 3/8 inches. It weighs 11.7 oz. The capacity full is over 280ml or 10 ounces, large for a Yixing Zisha clay teapot. The markings translate to Made by Xu SiHai. Although an outsider of Yixing, the center for Purple clay Zisha teapots, Xu Shi Hai, 许四海 was very dedicated to the art of forming teapots and decorating with carving. He finally gained recognition as a master potter in the city of many famous teapots artist. Xu Sihai (1946-2020) was a Chinese teapot creator, artisan, collector, and curator. Xu was an expert and authority on purple clay teapots, also known as the Yixing clay teapot. In 1992, Xu founded the Sihai Teapot Museum. The Facebook experts that we consulted think this is most likely a reproduction. One of the experts had never seen a pear shape teapot attributed Xu SiHai. Another expert could not find the marking in any of his books, in his library. The markings on the bottom, inside the lid and on the handle, do translate to : MADE BY Xu SiHai. The experts agreed, if this teapot could be attributed to be made by Xu SiHai, then it would be very valuable.
